Frequently Asked Questions
On macOS: Open HomeFront and navigate to the DNS Filtering section. Toggle "Enable DNS Filtering" to on. HomeFront will configure your system DNS settings to use its local blocklist. You may be prompted for administrator credentials.
On iOS: Open HomeFront and tap DNS Filtering. Tap "Enable." iOS will ask you to approve the DNS configuration profile in Settings. Follow the on-screen instructions to allow it. HomeFront uses Apple's Network Extension framework — no VPN tunnel is created.
DNS filtering blocks malware, phishing, ads, and trackers across every app on your device — not just your browser. It requires an active Pro subscription.
Note: iOS only allows one network extension at a time. If you use a VPN (NordVPN, Mullvad, etc.), DNS filtering will be paused while the VPN is active. HomeFront will notify you when this happens.
Open HomeFront and go to the Breach Monitor section. Enter the email address you want to check and tap "Check." HomeFront will query the Have I Been Pwned API using k-anonymity, meaning only a partial hash of your email is sent — never the email itself.
If breaches are found, HomeFront will list which breaches included your email and when they occurred. We recommend changing passwords for any affected accounts and enabling two-factor authentication where available.
Pro subscribers get continuous monitoring: HomeFront periodically rechecks your saved emails and notifies you if new breaches are detected.
Your Security Score is a number from 0 to 100 that reflects your device's current security posture. It checks:
- Firewall status (enabled or disabled)
- FileVault / device encryption status
- System Integrity Protection (SIP) on macOS
- Gatekeeper status on macOS
- Screen lock and passcode configuration
- Automatic software updates
- DNS filtering status (if Pro)
Each factor contributes to the total score. Tap on any individual item to see its current status and how to improve it. A score above 80 generally indicates strong device security.
HomeFront subscriptions are managed through the Apple App Store. To cancel:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad, or the App Store on your Mac
- Tap your name at the top, then tap Subscriptions
- Find HomeFront and tap it
- Tap Cancel Subscription
You can also manage subscriptions directly at apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions.
Your Pro features will remain active until the end of your current billing period. After that, HomeFront reverts to the free tier. No data is lost.
No. HomeFront does not create or use a VPN connection. DNS filtering is implemented using Apple's native DNS configuration APIs (NEDNSSettingsManager on iOS, system DNS configuration on macOS). Your internet traffic is never routed through our servers or any third-party proxy.
No. HomeFront collects zero user data. The only network requests are partial SHA-1 hashes sent to Have I Been Pwned for breach checks (using k-anonymity), and blocklist downloads from abuse.ch. Your emails, passwords, scan results, and security scores never leave your device. See our Privacy Policy for the full details.
